In this new school year, AISG introduced a new after school activity – the Quiz Bowl Team. For those who are still wondering what they should do Tuesday and Thursday after school, don’t worry, you have a new option. Feel free to join the Quiz Bowl Team organized by Mr. Chris Baier and Mr. Andrew Sinclair.
So, what is Quiz Bowl? According to Grade 11 student Caroline Mao, a member of the Quiz Bowl team, “Quiz Bowl is an engaging, fast-paced, fun activity with a focus on academic trivia.”
And according to the National Academic Quiz Tournament (NAQT), “Quiz Bowl is a game in which two teams compete head-to-head to answer questions from all areas of knowledge including history, literature, science, fine arts, current events, sports, and popular culture.”
In Quiz Bowl practices, students spend time learning and memorizing facts that will aid them in their toss-up and bonus questions. In addition, students create quizzes to challenge themselves and other members. And lastly, students also get the chance to spend time practicing by competing with each other through QuizUp, Sporkle or toss-up questions.
An example of a Quiz bowl toss-up question drafted by the NAQT would be:
This deity will talk nine steps and die after slaying his nemesis, which once tried to consume an ox head that this god brought on a fishing trip with Hymir [“HI”-meer]. The peasant Thjalifi [thee-YAHL-fee] becomes this god’s servant to atone for injuring one of this god’s goats, which (*) resurrect themselves after being eaten. At Ragnarök [RAG-nuh-“rock”], the Midgard serpent kills and is killed by — for 10 points — what Norse god, who owns the hammer Mjölnir [M’YOHL-neer]?
Please post your answer in the comment section below.
In my opinion, Quiz Bowl is an excellent opportunity for students who know a lot of random facts, students who read a lot or students who have a deep and wide understanding of the world. Quiz Bowl is a place where students can compete at an academic level, where the only gym we need is the Brain Gym. It’s an opportunity for people to learn, have fun and challenge themselves.
Quiz Bowl practices are held in Room 319 (Mr Sinclair’s room) on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 3:15 to 4:30. The Quiz Bowl is all year long, unlike most sports and other APAC activities. Even though Quiz Bowl has begun already, we still welcome all newcomers who wish to join.
