The Sudden Rise of Fortnite

Fortnite is currently the most played game in the entire world. Fortnite quickly gained popularity due to it being a unique combination of one of the most popular games in this decade, Minecraft, and the most popular game before Fornite came out, PUBG (Playerunkowns BattleGrounds). The game contains the essential element of  PUBG, which is that there are 100 people in every game and their goal is to jump out of a vehicle flying in the sky across the map to find equipment from the building on the map and kill each other until there is one guy or one team left. The game also includes building structures that would help you get around the map. The game is a third person style shooter that includes no blood and focuses more on the casual/ fun experience you have with friends rather than the competitive ranked experience. This caused this game to stand out from any other battle royale games and made the players from all ages come play this game.

Fornite was created by Epic Games in July 2017 and it started out in early access as a paid PvE (Player vs. Environment) game that had lots of positive reviews. At this time, PUBG just got launched and Epic Games have been keeping an eye on the game ever since it blew up in the global community. Epic Games wanted to replicate that and it created it’s own free to play battle royale mode in September, this is the mode that everyone knows Fortnite for. The rise of Fornite didn’t come easily when it first came out. There were lots of bugs and gameplay issues that would make the game unfair. Epic updated the game weekly and by December, it already had half of PUBG’s players and by January, Fortnite reached the top of the gaming world by beating PUBG’s concurrent players’ record of 3.2 million with 3.4 million active players.

Fornite rise also gave lots YouTubers and streamer way more viewers than before due to its popularity. A streamer named Tyler “Ninja” Blevins is currently the most popular streamer on twitch due to his amazing skills at the game. He has gotten 3 times as many viewers as he did before he started playing the game. Ninja got so much popularity that popular musicians such as Drake and Travis Scott became fans of him and they played with each other on stream. Ninja’s stream passed 635,000 concurrent viewers and broke the twitch record. Ninja could earn up to 1 million dollars a month playings games in his living room due to the popularity of the game.

Fornite deserves the success that it got rapidly because of how the developers worked hard to make the best game suited towards people of all ages. Epic Games made a game that built on top of the success of other battle royale games and added their own unique twist to differ from the others. Fortnite is still gaining tons of popularity today due to the developing team pumping updates every week. Fortnite doesn’t seem like it is going to stop currently or in the future due to all these reasons.
