AISG’s varsity volleyball teams’ first game took place on Thursday, September 8 at the Utahloy International School of Guangzhou (UISG). The match was held at the UISG gym for both the girls’ and boys’ teams.

The boys’ team, led by captains, Richie L., a senior, and Oscar L., a junior, won the first two sets and the fourth set. Unfortunately, they lost the third set, but they still came through with a win for their game.

The first set was won with the score 25 – 22, the second with 25 – 17, the third set was lost with the scores 23 – 25, and the final set was won with 25 – 20.

The boys’ team excelled in their quick attacks by the duo Richie L. and Luca W., a sophomore in the starting lineup as the team’s official setter.

Joshua J., a sophomore, that played for the boys’ team of aisgz said “Getting to play in the first game of the season was really exciting as a team we were able to overcome many difficulties throughout the game and become victorious.”

The girls’ team, led by two senior captains, Gwynnie G. and Sophia P., won the first two sets and despite a loss in the third set, came through with a win in their fourth set which handed the game over to them. The first set was won with the scores 25 – 12, and the second set with the scores 25 – 10.

The girls’ team was having an overwhelming victory until they lost their streak in the third set. However, they did an amazing job pulling through in their fourth set, which got them their win.

The girls’ team excelled in their serves and spikes, allowing them to garner a lot of points, especially senior and co-captain Gwynnie G., who had a float serve that was difficult for the opposing team to receive. Angela L., a junior, brought in many points with her hard spike.

“I felt really refreshed because it was the first game I played since last year,” said Sophia N., a sophomore and member of AISG’s varsity girls’ volleyball team. “Before the game though, I kept feeling my heart beating really hard out of nervousness. Overall, it was really nice to be back on the court.”

Both teams, girls and boys did an amazing job at their first game this year. Everyone, especially the AISG sports community is very much looking forward to the following games this season.
