What Do You Know About Your Peers?

People think they know those around them, but how much do you really know about your peers? We may know where people were born, but where do they consider themselves to be from?

Well, out of the 90 responses we received to our survey, we found that 25.3% of students consider themselves American, while 24.2% are from Korea. While these are the most common places for people to call home, this data doesn’t represent the student body fully.

Since not everyone in our high school answered the survey, we weren’t able to really understand the true demographics of our school. But, wherever our students were born, everyone who answered obviously attends our school.

Some students have been attending far longer than others. The majority of respondents (23.3%) have been at AISG for 3-4 years. 17.7% say they’re been coming here for 5-6 years, and 12.2% of students have either been here for 7-8 years, or more than 10. This shows just how varied the length of people’s stays here in Guangzhou are.

Yet, no matter how long a student has been attending AISG, we’ve all been stressed at least a few times. The vast majority of respondents (50.6%) say their most significant cause of stress, not surprisingly, is school. Behind school people say stress is caused by time management skills (18.8%). Lastly, 16.5% of students say their biggest cause of stress is pressure from their parents.

With all this stress, many students don’t know how to continue. Some may consider cheating. But, when asked, “What is your view on cheating?”, 61.1% of respondents replied that cheating is never okay, which is a good reflection of our school’s beliefs. 35.6% of students believe that it depends on the circumstances; 1.1% says that it’s okay, but in moderation; and sadly, 2.2% of students say that they do it all the time. Watch out, teachers!

On a lighter note, when asked, “What is your favourite new movie?” the most popular answer was Jurassic World (28%). Tied for second most popular were Minions and Inside Out (24%). And, in third place, Mission: Impossible—Rogue Nation with 21.3% of students’ votes.

While movies are good sources of lengthy entertainment, many choose shorter videos, such as the ones on Youtube. NigaHiga, by Ryan Higa, is the most popular choice (30%), with iiSuperwomanii, by Lilly Singh, tied for second with Tyler Oakley (15.7%). And lastly, Jenna Marbles and Miranda Sings came in at a draw for third place (12.86%)

Once again with favourite entertainment options: music! 52.8% of respondents replied with pop at the top of their list, with K-Pop following at 23.6%. And, occupying third place was electronic music (19.4%).

At AISG, sports are something that many enjoy, and while students are not busy with school or Youtube videos, many choose to do something athletic. The most popular sports, in the opinion of the respondents, are basketball and soccer, with 24.1% of votes. In second, volleyball (17.2%). And in third, badminton, with 12.6%. This just goes to show why our gym is always so full at lunchtime.

Lastly, when asked what their favourite subjects in school are, science was the most popular response, with 19.5% of votes. In second was math, with 17.2% of votes. And finally, in third place was history/social studies, with 14.5% of voters’ preference. However, 9.2% of people answered other, and the majority of those answers were art, which is something many students enjoy.

Although you may have thought you knew a lot about your peers, thanks to this survey, you now know a bit more about the demographics of our high school, along with most popular music, movies, Youtubers, and school subjects. How much of this applies to you?
