What We Know About the Murder of Daunte Wright

Daunte Wright was shot by a female police officer 10 miles away from where George Floyd was murdered by Derek Chauvin, in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, on April 11. Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old African American citizen of the U.S. was fatally shot by a policeman while he was being checked upon for a traffic violation. While being checked for this traffic violation, officers soon realized he had a warrant for his arrest.

In the process of arresting Daunte Wright, officers got into a minor argument and feud with him, leading to a police officer pointing a handgun at him while shouting “taser.” Later, the same officer who pointed the gun and shouted “taser” starts to yell and tells her two colleagues that she shot Daunte Wright.

She fired her pistol aiming at his chest, killing Daunte Wright, who was unarmed.

The officer who shot Daunte was later identified as a 26-year veteran of the same department. The officer was also allegedly demonstrating and training her less-experienced colleagues during her attempt to arrest Daunte Wright.

The Chief of the Brooklyn Center Police Department, Tim Gannon, reported that to his knowledge, “the officer had the intention to deploy the taser but instead shot” Daunte Wright with a bullet.

Currently, both the officer who shot Daunte Wright and Chief Gannon have resigned from their positions.

Many have pointed out how ridiculous it sounds for a veteran officer to mistaken a gun for a taser. A police officer who had worked in the same department for 26 years could not differentiate between a pistol and a taser, which are different in size, form, and color. The placing of the two devices in their uniforms is also different.

Currently, protests and demonstrations fighting for justice for Daunte Wright have been continuing day and night in Brooklyn. The National Guard Troop stands right outside of the police department center with guns and defenses, just like during the Black Lives Matter protest.
