If you’ve been on the internet at all in the past week, you might have noticed a lot of users discussing Morbius, the new Sony anti hero, vampire film set in the Marvel universe starring Jared Leto.

The movie dropped to absolutely abysmal critic reviews, gaining a 17% on the rotten tomatoes scale. Audience sentiment was similar, up until a few days ago. It quickly became a running joke on the internet to exaggerate Morbius’ success, with many users claiming that Morbius has “sold 1 trillion tickets,” or that Morbius has gotten a “200% rotten tomatoes score.”

All of these claims are obviously rooted in irony, and the sheer lunacy of users making it seem as if Morbius is the best movie ever made is just one way for people to make the experience more enjoyable, as the movie itself is certainly not enjoyable.

The jokes about this movie further developed when information regarding Jared Leto’s method acting surfaced on news outlets. With fellow cast members revealing that Leto refused to break character even when taking bathroom breaks, forcing staff to wheel him in his wheelchair into the restroom and reportedly taking upwards of 45 minutes per trip.

Jared Leto’s overall weird personality also drew attention from the internet, with many jokingly saying that the creepy vampire in Morbius is Jared Leto and that he is not playing a character. Furthermore, his supposed criminal activity and cult also came into light again and became a topic of discussion.

Despite the terrible reception to the movie, it still opened to an almost 40 million debut weekend, making it one of the highest grossing films of 2022 at the time of writing this article. This makes sense, as Sony’s previous superhero movie, Venom, was an unexpected smash hit with audiences. Fans were probably going into theaters expecting a similar experience only to be sorely disappointed.
