Community Events: Useless or Valuable?

• Bookmarks: 281161

Community events suck. That’s about as blunt as I can be. Speaking for myself, I really don’t get the point of community events. I know that there are sometimes some great ideas for the 45 minutes that we have no class, such as, pep rallies, field days, the ice cream sales, and the occasional teacher’s help. I totally agree that these few things help us bond and get closer to people in different grades, but I find that it isn’t only me who notices that the Tuesdays where we have nothing planned, end up being somewhat confusing because the shortened schedule is continued.

However, some people have a different opinion on the benefits of community events. Sophomore Prerna K says “I don’t really like the community events, but I do like that we have shorter classes”.  After asking her if she agrees with having them every Tuesday she goes on to state “I guess that some of them are useful but sometimes they are boring. So no, I don’t think we should have them every Tuesday”.

Junior Amanda D shares her opinion when I asked her about her idea of community events. “I like interesting community events. I like pep rallies and different presentations like the Econ one. Overall they’re okay I guess. I don’t like them or dislike them in general.”

I have heard many opinions other than these about the events that take place on Tuesday and quite a few sound the same. We are pretty early on in the year at the moment and I think that GENCO and STUCO are really trying to brainstorm new ideas to improve our community events. So far, Prerna, Amanda and I think they are better than last year and hope they continue to improve.
