Youtube Rewind 2018: Worst Video Ever?

On December 6, the annual Youtube Rewind of 2018 came out. Youtube Rewind is an annual recap video featuring some of the biggest youtubers of the last 12 months, and has been released by Youtube ever since 2010. The main goal of the Youtube Rewind videos is to celebrate the videos, people, music and moments that defined 2018.

This year’s Youtube Rewind featured many new youtubers, also including youtubers from previous years. Some new youtubers who were on this year’s Rewind include: Emma Chamberlain, Will Smith, James Charles, etc. In addition, this year’s video featured many well known events and trendy things that happened in 2018. These events cover the viral game Fortnite, Kpop song Idol by BTS, ASMR, a celebration of female empowerment, and much more.

Unfortunately, this year’s Youtube Rewind has become one of the most hated videos on Youtube. It has been ten days since the video has been released, and the video has now reached 11 million dislikes on Youtube. The 2018 Youtube Rewind has 1.3  million more dislikes from the #1 hated video on Youtube from just a week ago, which is Justin Bieber’s single Baby with 9.7 million dislikes. The Youtube Rewind might as well be considered as the #1 hated video as it only took ten days to reach to 12 million dislikes, while Baby reached to 9.7 million dislikes in the time span of 19 years. Youtube has faced many criticism from viewers as they failed to include some of the top youtuber’s in 2018 which include Shane Dawson, Pewdiepie, Logan Paul, and more.

Sophomore Sanshiro M. has watched every Youtube Rewind ever since it started. He commented that this year’s Rewind was “horrible because even though this year youtube tried to connect with the audience more by focusing less on youtubers and more on the trends that were happening, but they mistook what we wanted. [He thinks] that they should have included more well known youtubers and events that happened in 2018. An example would be the KSI and Logan Paul fight.”

In my opinion, compared to previous Youtube Rewind videos, I think that the 2018 Youtube Rewind isn’t good because the videos didn’t flow well with each other. An example would be the cuts in between different scenes, which were badly done as they were very sudden and random, which disrupted the flow of the video. Also, I agree that they could have included more youtubers such as Shane Dawson this year, as many of the featured youtuber’s were not as popular as many others in 2018.
