Beijing Issues ‘Red Alert’ for Pollution

O_initialOn Monday, December 7th, the Beijing city government issued the first Red Alert as their pollution levels reached hazardous. Schools and outdoor construction sites were closed, and the amount of cars allowed on the roads were restricted. The Municipal Bureau of Environmental Protection in Beijing says that, starting today, Tuesday December 8th, thick smog with cover the city. This will last for more than three days.

The Red Alert is the highest possible alert for pollution levels. This alert will be enforced until midday on Thursday, December 10th. Before this, it was under an Orange Alert, the second highest level. The Red Alert means that extra things will be enforced, such as the closing of schools, outdoor construction and other industrial activity that pollutes being stopped, restriction of cars on the road by use of odd license plates, and banning outdoor barbecues and fireworks.
