iPhone Xs-cessively Expensive

With the new release of the three new phones from Apple; iPhone Xr, iPhone Xs, and iPhone Xs Max, many buyers have different opinions about Apple’s newest products. The iPhone Xs contains recognizable designs from the iPhone X, released just last year with a 5.8-inch OLED display and stainless-steel sides. Apple also offers a larger version of the XS with a 6.5-inch OLED display called the iPhone Xs Max. This makes the iPhone Xs Max the largest phone Apple has ever released pushing the iPhone 8 Plus down to being the second largest phone. The iPhone Xs and Xs Max come in 3 colorways, these colors include space gray, silver, and a much more fleshed out gold colorway.

The third phone Apple has released is the iPhone Xr. The iPhone Xr also includes an all screen design similar to the iPhone X, a camera similar to the iPhone 8, as well as a wider variety of colors. Even though its camera is similar to the iPhone 8, it also includes an all-new sensor which should deliver higher resolution quality photos. But there are two features people are particularly excited about: Portrait Mode and Smart HDR. Portrait Mode is designed to blur the background when capturing a subject in the foreground. Smart HDR (High Dynamic Range) is a photographic technique that improves the dynamic range of high-contrast situations by taking multiple photos rapidly and blending them together. Though the price is cheaper than the other phones, there is a downside to it. Apparently, according to Apple, the iPhone Xr has a 326 ppi pixel display. Believe it or not, that’s the exact same ppi as the original Retina display on the now-tiny and ancient iPhone 4 back from 2010.

One other downside of the new iPhones is the price. The iPhone Xs with a 64-gigabit memory cost $999 USD, while the iPhone Xs Max with a 64-gigabit memory cost $1099. Even the cheapest of the new releases, the iPhone Xr, requires buyers to pay $799 USD for a 64-gigabit memory. As you can imagine, many people are complaining about the price, as it is much too expensive. I asked a few students for their opinions on the new phones and here is what they have said: Jason P., a sophomore who owns the new iPhone Xs, says “There’s not much of a difference between the new phones and the previous iPhone X, the iPhone Xr has a similar screen resolution as the iPhone 4 which doesn’t justify the price of the phone. I only bought the new iPhone Xs because I had an iPhone 6s with problems.” Rahul S., a sophomore who owns an iPhone X says, “It doesn’t make sense for Apple to sell this kind of phone because it’s too similar to the past iPhone X.”
