AISG’s brand new innovation lab is set to allow young engineers to create and build things as they wish. The lab is currently in the process of being set up with equipment, and should be ready by next month. Mr. Navis, who is in charge of the project, hopes that students will embrace their creativity to solve active problems in our society using this technology. Mr. Navis said, “When students walk into this room I expect them to be here to solve a problem, and leave from this room with a solution.” Our school is entering a new age of technology in which a student’s life is deeply integrated with technology, and so our school has decided move forward with this change and embrace it.

The school hopes to interlace the school curriculum and units of study with innovation lab activities. The innovation lab is currently intended to be used for science courses, but Mr. Navis plans to expand the range of courses involved. Perhaps in science classes one might use the 3D printers to construct the model of an atom, or use the drones to show students certain terrain and geography. The innovation lab can also simply be used to advance a student’s expertise in programming as the construction of an object using the 3D printer asks a student to program and construct their objects using Cero.

These are objects that have been recently printed from the 3D printer.

The Innovation Lab will be open to all students who are interested in creating objects with the 3D printer, using drones, or electrical engineering. The lab will also be used to teach electrical engineering in discovery courses.

There has been a storm of questions building up about the piloting of the lab’s drones. The lab currently has 25 parrot drones, and 2 DJI Phantom 4s. People who would like to pilot the drones will have to speak to Mr. Navis, or the staff at the Innovation Lab to first receive a license for drone. They will then have to come to the innovation lab for drone piloting classes. The drones can then checked out at any time by any licensed student to be used for media coverage, or any filming students may need to do in class, or extracurricular activities. If you do fancy controlling or piloting any drone please contact Mr. Navis and the staff at the innovation lab.

Finally, the innovation lab if as successful as it was predicted to be will be expanded with a new branch in the AISG library, so that High-School and Middle-School students will have separate environments to work in.
