A Staycation in Guangzhou: Places to go for CNY

• Bookmarks: 481587

Since we are an international school in China, we are given a two-week long break from February 10 to February 25 for Chinese New Year. This allows time to travel to places around the world. However, many may be looking forward to a vacation and a break right here in Guangzhou, in other words, a staycation.

If you are looking to the explore the city more while staying in Guangzhou, here are some places to explore while staying in Guangzhou for this two-week break.

Redtory

This is a place for art and design which is set up in an old factory, but now holds art galleries, stores, and cafes. The space is quite large and most of it is outdoors. Many visitors tend to use the space as a photo op, but it is a great place to explore and shop. It definitely is a great escape from the city as the buildings are older and reveal the history of this city. It’s easy to get lost in Redtory and you can always find something new when you go whether it’s a fun cafe or a new shop. This is definitely one of my favorite places in the city and I would definitely recommend visiting Redtory during your Chinese New Year break (or another time).

Kui Yuan Cafe/Art Gallery

This little place is a spot for food and art as well. It is a cute little place which is an art gallery that features different collections and is always changing what is on display. The art gallery also contains a cafe where you can sit and order some food after enjoying the art.

Shamian Island

This is an island with many old buildings built by foreigners. It is just a place to sightsee and walk around to enjoy an escape from the loud, busy city. The buildings are very European and quite different from Guangzhou, definitely giving you a vacation while staying in Guangzhou. Many people come here to take pictures and just relax.

Sculpture Park

This park is a great place for a stroll and to learn a little about Guangzhou’s history. It has many sculptures which are images or tributes to certain events in China’s history such as a large sculpture to commemorate all those lost from the outbreak of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome). This is a large park where you are sure to find something new every time you go. It is a quiet place to spend the afternoon and take a nice stroll.

These are just some of my recommendations for this break, but if you have any, please leave them in the comments below!
