From October 19 to 23 our girls’ and boys’ volleyball team attended the annual APAC tournament, this year taking place at Western Academy of Beijing (WAB). The six teams that participated in the tournament includes our very own Rams team, Brent International School of Manila (BISM), Seoul Foreign School (SFS), Shanghai American School of Puxi (SASPX), United Nations International School (UNIS), and the host, WAB.
On the first day of APAC, the girls had a tremendously strong start to the tournament. Facing UNIS, they dominated the court and had a 2-0 win. The girls’ second game was against WAB. After facing a devastating defeat during Tri-Cities against them the girls’ made it their goal to beat them back on the home court. Beginning with a 1-0 win, the girls struggled through the second set losing the set to tie a 1-1. With a strike back and a push of momentum, the girls ended the game with a victorious 2-1 winning the game. Junior Diana Lee said, “Nothing felt as good as showing all of them what kind of team we truly are and it was definitely once of my favorite moments of APAC.” During their last game, the girls once again dominated the court and took home 2 sets easily. On the other hand, the boy’s had a rougher start. The boys played three of the toughest teams: WAB, SASPX, and BISM. Although our boys lost all three games it did not stop their burning passion. The boys stayed together and played through every point and possession.
On the second day, the girls played against SASPX and BISM. SASPX and BISM are extremely tough competitors as they have multiple seniors, compared to both our girl’s team, one. On top of that, BISM has been the champions of Super APAC and APAC since 2009. Our girls did not let that stop them from playing their game, they pushed hard and maintained a strong team tenacity. Unfortunately, they lost both games but they still placed third in round robin. Our boys had a great start to their second day. They played SFS and beat them during
Meanwhile, our boys had a great start to their second day. They played SFS and beat them overtime, winning 2-1. With newfound confidence and determination, the boys continued strong in their second game against UNIS. Again proving that they are a hard team to beat, they brought UNIS into overtime. During overtime, both teams ground it out, fighting for that win. Unfortunately for our boys, UNIS won the last set. This put our boys into 6th place in the round robin. With the boys and girls current standings, they played WAB and UNIS, respectively. The girls beat UNIS 3-0 during playoff finals going into semifinals while the boys lost to WAB 0-3 during their playoff finals which bumped them into a battle for 5th place.
During the last day of APAC, the girls played a semifinals match against SASPX. The girls didn’t have a good start to the game which cost them 2 sets of the game. Already falling behind 0-2, the girls didn’t want to end the match just then. The girls’ team fired up with the help from the boys’ team and overpowered PX on the court. The girls put everything they’ve got into the game and stole a set back from PX. With a 1-2 game, the girls pushed even harder. Sadly, PX stopped the girls’ momentum and took home the last set, putting our girls into the match for 3rd place.
Our boys played UNIS for 5th place. Continuing their spirit and never ending determination, our boys were able to put up a fight when them. Although it was unfortunate that the boys lost 0-3 against UNIS, they definitely learned a lot about the game and improved their skills and reading. Playing the 3rd versus 4th place match with our girls was SFS. Our girls once again had a slow start to the match allowing SFS to have a 0-2 lead but their determination took over, and the girls took a set over making it 1-2. Unluckily, every single set the girls played against SFS were extremely tight. Every set, our girls had a tremendous lead of 7-0, but SFS stayed in the game and caught up. Our girls never backed off and edged them into 20-20 every single set putting them under pressure. Unfortunately, SFS had a better game that day and took home third, leaving our girl with fourth place. APAC concluded with our boys’ team taking 6th home and our girls’ team taking 4th home.
Lee added, “My goal for next year is not to get first place, though it would be great to end the season with that. But what I really hope is to see the constant progress over the season. I want us to stay strong even when we face difficulties and always think positively because it ain’t over till it’s over.”
