From October 18th to October 22nd the varsity girls’ volleyball team traveled to Brent International School of Manila to compete in Super APAC. The girls competed against all the schools from the Pacific division pool first, and then went against the other schools from the Asia division. Schools in the Pacific division included: Concordia International School of Shanghai (Concordia), Seoul Foreign School (SFS), Taejon Christian International School (TCIS), Hong Kong International School (HKIS) and United Nations International School (UNIS).
On the first day, the girls came in strong and dominated the court. During their first game against Concordia, the girls had an amazing game finishing Concordia by 2-0, winning both sets. Their level of energy continued to rise as they took on SFS next. A missed opportunity for third place last year against SFS really pushed the girls to do their best. They fought hard and were able to beat them 2-0. During the last game of the day, the girls took on UNIS. As late as 6 p.m. is for a match, it didn’t stop the girls from playing their game. They ended the day winning 3 games and 6 sets, staying on top of the tournament!
During the second day, the girls played against TCIS, HKIS, and Shanghai American School of Pudong (SASPD) from the Asia division. Continuing the spirit and hard work from the first day, they once again dominated the court beating both TCIS and HKIS by 2-0. The results came rolling in and the girls placed first in their division. Being the first, they had the opportunity to play against SASPD, who placed fourth in the Asia division, in quarterfinals. Similar to Tri-cities, the two schools had an edging competition going into the fifth set. Unfortunately, our girls were not able to add another win to their standing and were eliminated from the semi-finals. However, that didn’t stop them from doing what they had been doing on court, and that one game didn’t break their spirit.
On the last day, our rams played against SFS and Concordia once again. SFS played a phenomenal game and as Coach Luke Russell has heard, “it was the best game SFS has played the whole season.” Due to this, the girls missed out on the opportunity of competing in the 5v6 place match. Having lost two games in a row, the girls wanted to end the tournament with one last win. The girls successfully fulfilled their hope as they ended their last game against Concordia filled with energy. They beat Concordia 3-0, ending with 7 total wins in Super APAC. As a senior, I think that being able to win 7 games is one helluva achievement.
Being one of the two seniors on the team, it’s safe to say that the team next year will continue to grow and dominate on the court. The team is in good hands and I am super excited about the achievements they will be making next year.
Lastly, big round of applause to junior Becky Renfrow for receiving most valuable player during the tournament!
