The celebration of China’s 70th “birthday” (National Day) was held from October 1 to 7. On October 1, there was a special ceremony held in Tiananmen Square, which was decorated with Chinese flags and portraits of China’s past leaders. Government officials and President Xi Jinping, along with a large crowd of thousands of Chinese citizens, gathered to watch the parade of tanks, missiles, and soldiers as they marched across the square.
The hard work and time that was put into preparing for the Chinese National Day has also paid off. Many Chinese citizens look forward to the military march each year as they are known for their perfectly synchronized movements. Additionally, 40% of new military equipment such as their hypersonic missiles and aircraft were showcased publicly for the first time.
Along with the showcase of new technological advancements, President Xi Jinping stated in a speech that “no force can stop the Chinese people and the nation from marching forward.” Moreover, he also made comments in regard to the issue with Hong Kong and how they need to uphold a “peaceful reunification” and “one country, two systems” to protect the long-term stability of both Hong Kong and Macau.
This is junior Lillian L.’s first year celebrating the Chinese National Day. On October 1, Lillian L. watched the National Day parade live and thought that the parade was “interesting to watch, especially the soldiers because they were so synchronized.” Also, “it was cool that they had special shows that teach us about Chinese history.”
