Saturday, March 26th, was the day the Hoops for Hope basketball tournament took place for both middle and high school . Hoops for Hope is a community service group at AISG that hosts an annual fundraising basketball tournament for middle and high school students to compete in.

In past years, Hoops for Hope raised money for an organisation called the Song Ching Ling Foundation. The money was used to pay the hospital fees for the local children. Last year, it was donated to the to Red Cross for the Nepal Earthquake. The prize for winning the tournament is a brand-new pair of Nike basketball shoes for each member of the winning team.

All day long, basketballs swished through the hoops and bounced on the floors. However, in the end, only one team came out on top. This team’s members was from a local Chinese school. Just barely losing the first place title, Alex Wang (12), Andrew Elliott (12), Ardeshir Takaki (12), Jeremy Eng (10), and Steven Eng (10) came in second.

Tommy Lu, a senior and one of the people in charge of this event replied to the question, “Why do you think the annual Hoops for Hope tournament is such a successful fundraising event?” with, “Basketball is a very popular sport in China. Guangdong province was rated the number 1 basketball city in China. The players here are passionate about basketball, and that’s why the annual Hoops for Hope tournament is such a successful event.”.

It is hoped that in future years, this fundraising Hoops for Hope tournament has even more success and helps even more people in need.
