Is Uber Killing the Taxi Industry?

• Bookmarks: 371556

Uber has been around since 2009, but it only started getting big around the world starting in 2015. The taxi companies in many cities are going bankrupt due to Uber’s rise to popularity. Even though people that work in the taxi industry are protesting against Uber, according to Forbes, “It typically resulted in a fall in income of around 10% among salaried drivers, it resulted in a 50% rise in the number of self-employed drivers in a city.” This caused many cities around the world to ban Uber as a whole. Uber is banned in some places around the world such as Vancouver, Oregon, Denmark, Hungary, and Bulgaria. Uber has a complex effect on the world due to it creating job opportunities while also destroying other jobs.

Uber has created many job opportunities for people who don’t have the educational background to work standard jobs, which is very common in countries outside of North America and Europe. The company has saved many families financially because drivers can manage their own work schedule and services to earn more money while working for Uber. On the other side, taxi drivers only have day and night shifts and don’t get to control how much they work. This has caused Uber to be everywhere in big cities, and they steal the business of taxi drivers due to Uber cars being cleaner and more convenient. Overall, Uber is not killing the taxi industry around the world, but it’s affecting it in a negative way.
