On Saturday, 2 September, the AISG high school Student Council held a leadership workshop at Science Park. Gwen Farm, the executive president, said the main theme for this year’s StuCo was family. She believes that as we spend most of our time in school, school is like our second home, and the people in it are our family. Ms Dean, the coordinator of StuCo, said that she looks forward to having a great year with StuCo.

Many events are happening at Science Park this year, such as the upcoming Family Fun Day in September and Open Mic Night in November. Family Fun Day, hosted on Saturday 23 September, gives various community service organizations and other student groups the opportunity to raise funds by offering fun activities for small children, teenagers and adults. At Open Mic Night, which takes place this year on the evening of Friday 3 November, talented students can sign up in advance to sing, dance, and otherwise entertain their classmates, while StuCo representatives provide table service and tasty snacks. StuCo is already working hard to plan these events to ensure that everyone will enjoy the activities.

When StuCo elections took place last week, I was elected to represent the ninth grade as secretary, so I got to attend the events on Saturday. At the retreat, we played a variety of teamwork games. For example, one member was blindfolded as the other members guided them through an obstacle course without contact, and we also had to work together to solve a math problem. We also played icebreakers to learn each other’s names and discussed events happening this year. We set some ground rules, and learnt what each position is in charge of. Among other things, we established a rule about being open-minded to every idea we come up with, and communicating with each other.

I joined StuCo because I wanted to help make our school a better place for everyone. I am excited about being a part of organising and planning events and making everyone happy. Ben Kim, president of ninth grade GenCo, said that he loves StuCo because it is a place where we all discuss how to create a more comfortable and joyous environment for all the students here at AISG, and that he was personally excited about the grade level events. Gwen Farm also added that with major school-wide events such as Open Mic Night and the talent show, and smaller activities such as the HS music video and field day, working behind the scenes in facilitating the best experience possible for students and putting smiles on peoples’ faces is what she enjoys the most about being in StuCo.

StuCo looks forward to having a great year with the AISG community, and we hope we can give you a memorable high school experience.
