Fall season 2020 is the best season for new and returning anime this year.  Compared to the 25 anime that had aired in the summer, this fall season nearly doubles that amount. It is to no one’s surprise that this year has been the worst year for anime because of Covid-19. The number of delays and setbacks a lot of production studios had faced during the pandemic had dramatically lessened the amount of anime being pumped out each season. I asked Ashanty G., a tenth grader and fellow seasonal anime watcher, for her thoughts about how well this year’s anime compareto 2019. She told me,” There are some really good ones in 2020, but 2019 overall had much better anime.”

Even though spring and summer 2020 were the worst seasons for anime in a long while, this fall season is entirely different and boasts a selection of 48 different anime to choose from.  It has an anime that anyone can enjoy from genres ranging from mystery to mainstream Shōnen to even wholesome yuri. There are several returning shows such as Haikyuu!!, Dan Machi, Golden Kamuy and (somehow) One room. This season also provides two remakes of the extremely famous franchises Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Gou and the third adaptation of Love live! The final notable mention would be Noblesse which is one of the eight manhwas that is getting an anime adaptation.  I asked David, another anime fan on what he thought of this fall season’s anime and he said,” This has got to be the strongest season for anime we’ve seen this year and there is something for everyone here.”

2021 is around the corner and quarantine will surely end soon. So have a look at what shows are airing during this fall season and maybe pick one up for yourself.

Akudama Drive

Studio: Studio Parrot

Genre: Action, Sci-Fi

Distributor rights: Funimation

Brief Summary: In a Cyberpunk world our protagonist who is given the pet name “Swindler” is an ordinary person. In a series of events, she gets caught in the largest heists in the world with the most dangerous criminals alive.

Enjoyment: This anime is nonsensical and relatively illogical in its storytelling. However, the interesting art style and amazing setting allow for unique storytelling and an engaging plot. If you are the type of person to enjoy constant plot twists, this would be an anime for you.

Munou Na Nana

Studio: Bridge

Genre: Highschool, Supernatural, Mystery, Thriller

Distributor Rights: Funimation

Brief Summary: Talentless Nana is set in an alternate world where people have superpowers (like My Hero Academia). We follow a generic shōnen anime up until the final moments of the first episode. This thriller/mystery anime has so far been one of my favorite anime and is definitely worth a watch.

Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club

Image from Amazon Prime Video

Studio: Sunrise

Genre: Idol, Music, Highschool

Distributor Rights: Funimation

Brief Summary: This is another adaptation of the Love Live! franchise however does not follow the same story as the other two adaptations. Rather than trying to keep the school running, this new adaptation of Love Live! is a breath of fresh air for anime watchers with an entirely new storyline.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Gou

Studio: Passione
Genre: Horror, Mystery, Thriller

Distributor Rights: Funimation

Brief Summary: Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Gou is the newest adaption of its visual novel. Being the third adaptation, this visual novel and anime has garnered a lot of attention and is praised as being one of the best thriller-horror anime to have come out in a while.

Jujustsu Kaisen

Studio: Mappa

Genre: Action, Magic, Supernatural

Distributor Rights: Crunchyroll

Brief Summary: Idly indulging in baseless paranormal activities with the Occult Club, high schooler Yuuji Itadori spends his days at either the clubroom or the hospital, where he visits his bedridden grandfather. However, this leisurely lifestyle soon takes a turn for the strange when he unknowingly encounters a cursed item that triggers a chain of supernatural occurrences.

There are several returning franchises such as Attack On Titan season 4, Haikyuu season 4 Pt.2, Dan Machi Season 3 all of which are phenomenal anime. AOT season 4 airs December 7 so it isn’t too late to catch up on one of the most hype franchises since last decade.
