A new airport (Beijing Daxing International Airport) in Beijing, China launched on September 25, 2019 the same day as the celebration of China’s 70th anniversary of the and is now the world’s largest airport.
BCIA, the airport that is currently being used in Beijing, had become the world’s second busiest airport. BCIA is also known for having world’s worst delays because of its busy schedule. BCIA has been in use for many years and, last year, served over 100 million passengers when the capacity is usually 85 million people even with an extra terminal added. Beijing Capital International Airport will still be in use while Daxing Airport keeps developing.
Daxing International Airport was estimated to cost 11.5 billion dollars to build with over 40,000 workers working on the site; the construction for the new airport started back in 2014. Daxing Airport is approximately 650 yards long and promises an eight minute walk between security checkpoints. Daxing International Airport will be able to handle 45 million passengers by 2021 and plans to expand the capacity to 72 million passengers by 2025 (scmp.com). Included in the airport, there is a “China Garden” with a “serene inspired courtyard” with a small pond of koi carp.
On the day of the opening of Daxing airport, President Xi Jinping entered through the main entrance, where he was greeted by the airport officials. Xi got to know the new airport through a reel of the new airport and what it has to offer. Xi officially declared the Beijing Daxing International Airport open on October 1, 2019. Later on, the press and airline representatives watched as the first plane (China Southern) took off.
We can expect to be adjusting to the new airport in a few years as it finishes its last touches. With the new technology and the space that is available, there is no doubt that Daxing Airport will become the busiest airport.
