Our new featured alum is Abby Chung, Class of 2016. Below, she shares about her life and experience at Vanderbilt University Blair School of Music, majoring in music education.

Her favorite thing about university is the diversity of people you can meet, “It’s a more open environment with a greater variety of people so it’s easier to find people that are like you.” Her experience at AISG helps her blend in better, “It helps with blending in because there are no language barriers and smaller cultural shock. Sometimes people tend to forget that I’m Chinese and not American though,” Abby adds.

With just a bit more than a year left in her college life, Abby also knows what she wants to for a career. “I came into college wanting to be a general music teacher teaching K-12, and I still am most passionate about this path. But, college allowed me to add to that passion as I get increasingly intrigued about the methods used in teaching music, how kids actually learn musicianship skills, and how the brain benefits from multiple aspects of music-learning. Hopefully, I will be able to teach general music and do research to answer my many questions regarding music education at the same time”.
