Lisa Mo, a member of the class of 2020, graduated amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. She is currently attending the University of California, Berkeley, as a sophomore after completing her first year online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Let us see how Lisa is dealing with this unideal situation.
1. How have you been lately?
It’s been great so far! I moved to the States a month ago to attend Berkeley after completing my first year online. It’s my second year of university on paper, but it really does feel like a “freshman year.” I love how ambitious and driven the students are here – though some would say we are over-competitive at times.
2. What are your aspirations after graduating university?
I actually have a few paths that I’d like to explore. I’m currently majoring in sociology with a minor in education for my undergraduate degree, but I do want to pursue a masters in education as well.
Next, I also hope to continue growing the company I founded last year with another Berkeley student. Our platform connects international students in Asia to current, top university students for mentorship and guidance.
Lastly, my end goal or my long-term aspiration would be to positively influence the next generation – whether that takes the form of becoming a teacher, increasing access to schools, or building my own. We will see!
3. Could you briefly state your experiences at AISG? (because i know you’ve left a profound footprint here!)
I was pretty involved in school activities. I ran for student council for all four years of high school, becoming executive president in my senior year. I was also with the National Honor Society for three years, leading the club as president for two. I was involved with Model United Nations and our Varsity Volleyball team both for four years. I volunteered with Habitat for Humanity on trips, and I also participated in APAC Strings Orchestra.
4. How do you look back at your high school life? Any memorable experiences or any regrets?
When I reminisce about high school, I think about Ms. Dean’s decorated classroom (I spent around 50% of my time there for English, Student Council, and just generally hanging out), our MUN trips, and Open Mic Nights. I think I had a crazy work-life balance considering I was so involved with everything, but I genuinely loved it and don’t regret it at all. Overall, the most memorable experience for me would be SEOMUN in my senior year before COVID lockdown! I had such a blast being in the International Court of Justice and also hanging out with my close friends in Seoul.
5. What advice would you give to our current high school students, especially to our juniors and seniors, who are struggling with IB and college apps?
I would say that you should really cherish this high school experience where you get to meet your group of friends every single day for 7-8 hours because you’ll never really get to experience that again. Even though IB and college apps are really time-consuming and tough, find hobbies and activities that you enjoy to give yourself a small break! You always work better when you are relaxed and in a good mood. As for IB and college apps themselves, I would say to try your best and give your best effort! Good luck~
